Move the House
This awarded LEED Platinum four-story, mixed use building in Southeast Portland consists of ground floor retail space with three levels of one- and two-bedroom apartments above. This design is intended to create a contemporary ground floor datum with more historic residential blocks above. To avoid the "supersized" buildings this type of development can create, the residential block is split in the middle by a sky-bridge corridor with a contemporary glazing treatment. Retail services thrive on the south-facing development that looks onto a City-operated community garden. The building is enveloped by a permeable surface courtyard with vegetated planters and other state-of-the-art features custom designed to manage storm water.
This unique project saved an existing home by picking it up, building a new foundation, and relocating the home to face 38th Avenue. This allowed for a balanced transition from the inner, residential neighborhood to the commercial thoroughfare on Division Street.
